Friend sends gift, but I can't visit

A friend is sending me gifts regularly, but every time I try to visit I receive the "player's version is out of date" pop-up. This has been going on for over a week or two. I have tried visiting through the friends list and clicking on their name when it appears when I visit someone's manor, but no luck. How is it possible for them to send me gifts when I can't visit their manor? I feel terrible that I am not thanking them for the gifts. They have not sent me a wall request recently, so I do not have them on the wall, so I don't know if I could visit via the wall.

I am not receiving that message for anyone else out of 200 friends, even if other friends are "locked" - just the usual error messages that go away after trying a couple of times.

Hi, try requesting them for gifts that are in the current version only (like the flaming skull), that way a message will appear on their wall saying something along the lines of 'your friend has requested you for a gift, please update your game in order to send' and should hopefully encourage them to check their AppStore updates!

By the way - the most recent update was today 3/7/12 - after updating you can request the flaming skull from scrolling right down to the bottom of your collections - it's one of the items required to charge the golden van helsing collection.

Hope it isn't me!:-) although, I have done all my updates. I have the same problem, but with a no server response. I know the players are active, because they sent me gifts I just can't thank them since I can't visit. I do send them a charging gift using the gift wall...so they know I haven't forgotten them. They don't message me or make requests, so I can't even send them a message. Since you've seen them in another friend's manor, can you send a message that way? Or ask your friend to send them a message for you asking them to post on your wall, so the two of you can figure it out.
